Hurricane Turkey Chili

"'Come in,' she said, 'I'll give you shelter from the storm." -Bob Dylan I like storms. They are an excellent excuse to stay inside, watch movies, and hang out with friends. I even like when the power goes out (temporarily), since cocktails by candlelight is one of my very favorite pastimes. As long as you have good company, storms can be rather cozy and romantic. So, I was kind of excited when I first heard about the approaching “Frankenstorm” last week*Honestly, I wasn’t all that worried about Sandy, since Irene turned out to be a total tease. In preparation for Irene, I went wiiiiild. I stocked up on groceries for a week and bought enough booze to fill a bathtub. And then nothing happened. Seriously. It rained for a few hours, the wind blew a little bit, and that was that....

Pan-Fried Sole with Zucchini and Cherry Tomatoes

“I think it's good for a person to spend time alone. It gives them an opportunity to discover who they are and to figure out why they are always alone.”- Amy SedarisFancy table for one.I really settled into the whole “dinner for one” thing when I first moved to Paris after college. I had no friends, no roommate, and apparently my French wasn’t nearly as good as I thought. Since I hadn’t started my culinary training yet, I wasn’t exactly cooking up a storm in my tiny Parisian apartment. Plus the stove only worked fifty percent of the time, and I was using the oven as storage space for my sweaters. After a week or so of eating yogurt and toast for dinner, I realized I needed to re-evaluate my eating habits. And my social life. So, I decided to start taking...

Baked Pizza Chicken and Cheesy Garlic Bread

"Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new." -Brian TracyI’m not the greatest with kids. So, when Logan asked me last week if I would cook dinner for Daniel, the high school student that he mentors, I was a little hesitant. However, I’ve heard a lot of great things about Daniel over the past year, and the Student Sponsors program that Logan is involved with is pretty amazing. (I love a guy that is good with kids and devotes time to community service. Opposites attract, blah blah.) So, even though I was nervous about having Daniel over, I agreed to make dinner because I am a supportive roommate/girlfriend. I also recognize that I should probably work on my child-interaction skills. The night before the dinner...

Roasted Chicken and Vegetables and Pumpkin Puree

"Let's all celebrate, and have a good time." -Kool and the Gang on fall festivities  This isn't me, but I'm all about giving others a shot on my blog. Welcome to fall! Finally. Fall is by far my favorite season. I’m all for sunshine and sangria, but at a certain point, enough is enough. After a ridiculously steamy September in NYC, I couldn’t be happier for this week’s transition into sweater weather. I look awesome in sweaters. There are so many wonderful things about fall: pumpkins, candy corn, warm alcoholic beverages, Halloween, THANKSGIVING…what’s not to like? Unfortunately, I live in a tiny apartment in NYC and not a rustic farmhouse in the country, which is arguably this season’s dream home. However, I refuse to let this annoying fact keep me from enjoying all of the fall activities I love. And neither should you....

My Girlfriends’ Boyfriends

Meet Daphne, Annabel, Megan, and Lara:The five of us have been a pretty tight-knit girl gang since college. I have many things to say about these girls, but I don’t want to bore you/make you jealous by discussing our communal awesomeness. In a nutshell: Girlfriends are important. And mine are the best.Boys have come and gone over the years (in a totally non-slutty way, obviously), but we’ve always remained obsessed with each other. Therefore, it’s understandably an adjustment when one of us brings a “serious” boyfriend in to group. The vetting process is intense, and the transition period has the potential to be very awkward. Lara brought Charlie into the group three years ago, so he's pretty much a staple. Then I met Logan a year and a half ago. He had a slow introduction to the group because...

The Dude Diet: Addendum

Because of the overwhelming response to last week’s post, I have decided that it is only fair to update you on Logan’s progress. I also received several inquiries regarding the details of the dude diet, so I have briefly outlined its components below. The best part about the dude diet is that nothing is completely off-limits. It’s all about moderation and being less of an idiot…the-dude-dietThe dude. The Dude Diet: Pretty much the most obvious diet in the world.1. Limit bread, rice, pasta, and potato intake. Good general rule: If it’s white, think twice. The amount of white flour and processed food that I have watched dudes consume in a single day makes me want to die. Oh, and “wraps” are not any better for you than bread, capiche? Try some whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, etc.), they taste good. Fact.2....

The Dude Diet.

"I believe in miracles. Where you from, you sexy thing?" -Hot Chocolate   My boyfriend is on a diet.I have chosen to share this with all of you because it is a miracle, and because if I can get Logan to like eating healthily, I am pretty much a culinary genius. And you can be too. Allow me to explain…Logan eats as if he is still a college athlete (which in his mind, I’m pretty sure he still is). And because he is now a very busy and important man, he no longer has the time to exercise.* This poses a slight problem physically, especially when one’s diet consists largely of burgers, pizza, and cheese steaks. Like most guys, he’s packed on a few lbs since college, but he’s never seemed overly concerned about it. Nothing a good button-down can’t hide, right?Read More >>

Easy Braised Short Ribs

"Oh, wipe your tears away. Sunday, bloody Sunday." -U2 on Sunday dinnersFor the record, I haven’t always hated Sunday nights. In fact, I even looked forward to them as a kid. My family was pretty traditional. Every Sunday night, my mom would park in the red zone outside California Pizza Kitchen while we picked up enough take-out to feed a small army and then rushed home to watch “Touched by an Angel.”Unfortunately, somewhere along the line, Sunday nights took a nasty turn for the worst. In high school and college, people tend to be stressed about all the homework they should have started much earlier. After college, people start to dread the work week while also frequently living in a shame spiral from their behavior on Friday and Saturday. However, I have found that many of my unemployed and self-employed friends*...

Camping gone Classy…”Rustic” Chicken Fajitas

"Come on baby, light my fire." -Jim Morrisonrustic-chicken-fajitas-camping-mealsI bet you've never seen Martha Stewart like this.I didn’t grow up camping. My siblings and I weren’t terribly athletic or rugged, and my mom always said that she “didn’t want to sleep with her face in the dirt, thanks.” So, my family vacations were more “naps on the beach” than “outdoor adventures.” It wasn’t until recently that I developed an interest in camping. And by recently, I mean last year when the guy I had just started dating suggested we go on a camping trip together. I said that camping sounded like a great idea. Then I hung up and sent an email to all my friends saying the relationship was doomed. I mean, clearly this guy didn’t know me AT ALL. As I have said, I was never overly outdoorsy…I...

Southwestern Sweet Potato Salad

“Before you came into my life I missed you so bad. I missed you so, so bad.” –Carly Rae Jepsen on Southwestern Sweet Potato Saladsouthwestern-sweet-potato-saladSide dishes are my favorite. You serve an excellent piece of meat or fish, but you pair it with something lame? MEALBREAKER. So, earlier this week I spent an embarrassing amount of time strutting around the grocery store with Nicki Minaj in my earphones and some halibut steaks in my shopping basket, waiting to be struck with a brilliant idea for how to round out my meal. Considering the fact that the air-conditioning in my apartment was broken, I was also conscious of minimizing the whole “slaving over a hot stove” thing. Inspiration struck when I noticed the display of corn next to the sweet potatoes. Sold! I had also walked by a Chipotle earlier, so Mexican...
